FREE MUSIC 12/28 [Mash-Up, Joe Pug, Klaxons, The North Country, & more]

Free music is always awesome. I've been inspired by some blogs, namely A Truer Sound [which I am starting to really enjoy], which have been posting some free tunes today. I'll try and keep this a weekly or bi-weekly post because I know we always don't have music to spend money on. Wait, I got that wrong, it would be nice if it was that way, but then we would be listening to some pretty shitty music. I guess the music-world is more giving around the holiday season because there is a lot of good, free music out there right now.

JOE PUG
Mr. Pug is so confident his music is good [if you didn't hear his 2010 release, Messenger go check it out] that he is MAILING physical CDs out to anyone who requests them. That's right, he's sending actual compact discs out to people who request them, so you can pass them out to your friends and their friends and so on. I highly recommend that you do this.

THE NORTH COUNTRY
The Band's Bandcamp [link below] says that this album was written and recorded in Andrew Grossman's bedroom during 2010. This is an amazingly good album for the price and for the low remarks given on the site. It's a great acoustic album but in parts instruments are thrown that compare to the Black Keys blues side then it switches straight to a poppy Freelance Whales song. It's so diverse and so good.

THE BROTHERS OF CHICO DUSTY
Big Boi vs. The Black Keys
If you haven't heard of this mash-up album by now, you're living under a rock. Its a brilliant idea. Why not combine two of the best albums of the year and make something beyond imagination. Well there is only so much to work with but wick-it puts the right beats with the right lyrics on this one. It pleases Big Boi/Outkast fans and Black Keys fans alike.

KLAXONS
I'll have to say that I wan't a big fan of their 2010 release Surfing the Void but I sure did love the cover. Well they have released a free EP, Landmarks of Lunacy, of stuff they recorded back in 2008 but hadn't yet released. And they made it available for free.

PREVIOUSLY POSTED ON YTE:

jj - KILLS Mixtape
[YTE POST] If you haven't already got the brilliant chill-hop mixtape from the Sweedish duo, do-it now.

Yeasayer – Live at Ancienne Belgique
[YTE POST] Yeasayer doesn't disappoint ever. This is a recording of the high-energy performance they always bring.

Ray Ban - Never Hide Noise EP2
[YTE POST] Great compilation of up-and-coming bands. The artists on this will make a name for themselves in 2011, know them before your friends.

Mike Cooley - Live at the 40 Watt
[YTE POST]Great live recording of a solo show by the singer from Drive-By Truckers back from 2005.

[FREE ALBUM] Mike Cooley [of Drive-By Truckers] Live At The 40 Watt 2/25/05

Well folks, it looks like I've passed the 500 post mark along with turning one year. Looks like the accomplishments are all coming at once. Well I went deep into the vault for this post. Let me start off by saying this, if you have illegally downloaded an album in the last week I bet this free, live album will knock its socks off. Yes, even if it's Kanye or The King Is Dead.

Mike Cooley doesn't really do back-up vocals for the Drive-By Truckers, he's more of a second lead-singer behind Patterson Hood and shares the spotlight behind Hood with Shonna Tucker, both usually have 2-3 tracks on each album. No discredit to Hood, but Cooley writes some of the best songs the Drive-By Truckers have in their collection. I downloaded this free recording of the live show over the summer and came back across it last night. If you are interested in the Drive-By Truckers, a die-hard DBT fan, semi-interested in song writing, or are a fan of alternative country, you are sure to find this precious recording a steal. His stories are usually dark and you wouldn't be hard-pressed to find these stories true if you were to head down South .[yes, further down South than NC] To quote Cooley from the album on the realness of the stories "It's true just like the rest of the stories." This album is just Cooley and an acoustic guitar on stage and the relatively quiet crowd makes the quality sound that much more studio-quality than live.

[MP3] Porcelain Raft | Come Closer

Check out the video below and grab the song for free over at his BANDCAMP. A perfect song for a white day. I'd highly recommend helping yourself to more of his free downloads while you're over there.

[MP3] Telekinesis | Please Ask For Help

Here is a second track set to appear on 12 Desperate Straight Lines, and fittingly it's the second song on the album. It is exactly what you would expect from Telekinesis, a short catchy pop song on the outside with serious and large topics in mind on the inside. Check out a previous POST on "Car Crash," the lead single from the album, set to be released on Feburary 15th, through Merge Records. After these two songs, this sophomore really shaping up nicely. Pre-Order it HERE.

Yeasayer | Live at Ancienne Belgique [Name Your Price Album]

It wasn't the best concert I went to all year, but it was the most fun. Yeasayer stopped by Cat's Cradle back on my Birthday [Apr. 4] and really knocked my socks off with how good they sounded. This NAME YOUR PRICE live album is nothing less than I expected when I came across the great news. The quality is outstanding for this free download. Here is a little message from the band:
"Dear Wonderful Fans,
To celebrate the close of 2010, your amazing support, and numerous requests, we have decided to unlock the Yeasayer vault and release this live show recorded at the lovely Ancienne Belgique in Brussels. We are letting you, the fans, name the price. See you in 2011.
– Much Love, Yeasayer"
Head over to their WEBSITE to download this album. And, Yes, the Name-Your-Price includes FREE.

[FREE EP] Ray Ban Never Hide Noise EP2

Here is a 5 song EP from the sunglasses maker Ray Ban. They have rounded up a few artists that will surely roundhouse kick 2011 in the face. Cloud Nothings are some enjoyable lo-fi stuff while Hanni El Khatib is more blues-influenced.

1] Cloud Nothings - Even If It Worked Out
2] Mind Spiders - Worlds Destroyed
3] Hanni El Khatib - Loved One
4] Dom - Bochicha
5] The Chain Gang Of 1974 - Make My Body

Gorillaz | The Fall [iPad Composed & Produced]

Here is a follow up to their earlier 2010 release Plastic Beach. The Fall was made completely on an Apple iPad while the group was on tour across the US this Autumn. Mastermind behind the band Damon Albarn says the album is mostly instrumental and is a 'soundtrack to driving the United States,' hence the names of most of the songs. Head HERE to listen to the album by surrendering your email. If you are a Sub-Division member you can download the album, but there is a £29.99 joining fee which may or may not be worth the download of the highly experimental and probably divergent nature of The Fall, but you do receive 25% off for paying the £29.99 [just some info for thought].  Tracklist after the jump.

[FREE] Joe Purdy Gives Away New Album "This American" Through Dec. 31

[MIXTAPE] jj | KILLS [Covers of Notorious B.I.G., Kanye, Jay-Z, and more]

Just as promised, the new mixtape, KILLS, from jj has beat out Santa in getting to our houses on this Christmas Eve. Take in the soothing, mellow gangsta rap while sipping on some spiked eggnog. When do you ever hear someone say a sentence like that? jj has a way to turn gangsta rap into something more than its original intention. They make the rappers lyrics transparent, either revealing the terribly poor lyric-writing skills of a rapper or giving an insightful look at the rapper's genius. Have a look for yourself with the link below.

[MP3] The Love Language Release a Christmas Song | "Gsus"

From Stu McLamb of The Love Language:
"It may be late but it's just in time! Me and BJ holed up in his room yesterday and today and wrote and recorded this Christmas original. The rest of the band was out of town so we decided to include voicemails they left us. this also marks the song debut of our humble manager and mentor Geoffrey Sawyer. He's the dude that sounds like Barry White at the end. "

Smith Westerns | "Weekend" & "Imagine Pt. 3" | Dye It Blonde

IMAGE

I haven't posted on The Smith Westerns yet but their upcoming album is on the horizon and from the look/sound of the single "Weekend" the album is going to be more than great. Their semi-lo-fi pop sound has a ounce of a folk twang and butt-load of energy which results in a pure, eclectic alternative sound. They are definitely ringing in 2011 in with a fresh slap in the 'stache.  Dye It Blonde is set to be released on January 18th through Fat Possum Records. The band is stopping by Local 506 on January 30th with Yuck. Check two new songs below and the tracklisting below.

1] Weekend
2] Still New
3] Imagine Pt. 3
4] All Die Young
5] Fallen In Love
6] End of the Night
7] Only One
8] Smile
9] Dance Away
10] Dye The World

[MP3] Drive-By Truckers | Girls Who Smoke

Check out the bonus cut from The Big To-Do released back in March. "Girls Who Smoke" was a vinyl-only cut that they have released on their website. I'd say the lyics are true to their subject, but then that would be demeaning to some. The lyrics are telling:

"I can tell by her lips she's got fucked up teeth
She's got a banged up grill like she just hit a deer
In a while she'll go down in a tent with a bloke
You know what they say about girls who smoke..."

Oldermost | Lose Your Mind

Here is a great new song from Oldermost, whom I just recently found  out about. It's some fun stuff that reminds me of Noah and the Whale, but catchier and more energized. The lyrics are good, the production is great and its just a great song to listen to. "Lose Your Mind" is from the band's self-titled EP. It's LP quality and diversity packed into 16-minutes of straight-up potential and consistently unraveling awe-inspiring [AWESOME] and indulgent tunes.. Watch "Lose Your Mind" below and really lose your mind when you head over to their Bandcamp where you can find their self-titled EP for one of the best deals of the holiday season, name your price. Get on their email list and find out more about their upcoming shows.

The Lonely Island | I Just Had Sex (feat. Akon)

The Lonely Island [feat. Akon] - I Just Had Sex

X-Mas Present from jj

jj - KILLS

Sweedish ambient-electro duo jj will release a mixtape, presumably free with a bunch of rap covers. If you haven't heard their awesome cover of Lil Wayne's "Lollipop" off their debut 2009 album, check it out here. It seems that some of their best work comes when they take mainstream US rap that typically clogs the radio waves and turns them into soft ballads with ear-pleasing female vocals instead of raspy, testosteroned rappers. The mixtape is said to include "Empire State of Mind" as well as a song by The Dream. Mixtapes are typically free, but I will definitely have an update on that in 5 days when it is supposed to drop. Enjoy this awesome cover song they released earlier in the year below!
