FREE MUSIC 12/28 [Mash-Up, Joe Pug, Klaxons, The North Country, & more]

Free music is always awesome. I've been inspired by some blogs, namely A Truer Sound [which I am starting to really enjoy], which have been posting some free tunes today. I'll try and keep this a weekly or bi-weekly post because I know we always don't have music to spend money on. Wait, I got that wrong, it would be nice if it was that way, but then we would be listening to some pretty shitty music. I guess the music-world is more giving around the holiday season because there is a lot of good, free music out there right now.

JOE PUG
Mr. Pug is so confident his music is good [if you didn't hear his 2010 release, Messenger go check it out] that he is MAILING physical CDs out to anyone who requests them. That's right, he's sending actual compact discs out to people who request them, so you can pass them out to your friends and their friends and so on. I highly recommend that you do this.

THE NORTH COUNTRY
The Band's Bandcamp [link below] says that this album was written and recorded in Andrew Grossman's bedroom during 2010. This is an amazingly good album for the price and for the low remarks given on the site. It's a great acoustic album but in parts instruments are thrown that compare to the Black Keys blues side then it switches straight to a poppy Freelance Whales song. It's so diverse and so good.

THE BROTHERS OF CHICO DUSTY
Big Boi vs. The Black Keys
If you haven't heard of this mash-up album by now, you're living under a rock. Its a brilliant idea. Why not combine two of the best albums of the year and make something beyond imagination. Well there is only so much to work with but wick-it puts the right beats with the right lyrics on this one. It pleases Big Boi/Outkast fans and Black Keys fans alike.

KLAXONS
I'll have to say that I wan't a big fan of their 2010 release Surfing the Void but I sure did love the cover. Well they have released a free EP, Landmarks of Lunacy, of stuff they recorded back in 2008 but hadn't yet released. And they made it available for free.

Black Keys Play Letterman 5/25

Last night the Black Keys stormed David Letterman for an awesome performance of "Tighten Up." See all those people playing instruments in the background? It's a shame, I wish they were still solely using the guitar and drum combo, but this still sounds amazing. If you didn't catch my top 10 May releases, you'll see where their 8-day-old album Brothers took the number one spot. It's a phenomenally strong performance throughout and the first four songs may be the best kick-off to an album in the last 15 years.

May Releases Ranked 1-10

1. The Black Keys - Brothers
2. The Hold Steady - Heaven Is Whenever
3. The National - High Violet
4. Band of Horses - Infinite Arms
5. LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening
6. Male Bonding - Nothing Hurts
7. The New Pronographers - Together

8. Woods - At Echo Lake
9. Broken Social Scene - Forgiveness Rock Record
10. Sleigh Bells - Treats

Weekly Q-Tips

  • Big news in the mp3 world. iTunes as you may not have known bought lala a few months ago, and on May 31st, we will be saying a fond farewell to the endlessly pleasing full catalog of music. Is iTunes heading towards this type of monthly-fee to access all music deal or just eliminating the competition?
  • The Black Keys are opening for Kings of Leon, it is undoubtedly a good move popularity-wise but that is hardcore selling out. The Black Keys are better than that, but maybe it's a clever ploy to attract Chaperons. They're playing in Raleigh on September 13th and Kings of Leon is in the studio working to drown the radio in half-pop half-wtf tunes for the summer.
  • On a much brighter note, Wilco is planning to record some new material this summer.
  • Tuesday May 4th Notable Releases
    • Broken Social Scene - Forgiveness Rock Record
    • Flying Lotus – Cosmogramma
    • Free Energy - Stuck On Nothing
    • The Hold Steady - Heaven Is Whenever [Pre-Order] [Album of 2010,  so far]
    • Josh Ritter - So Runs The World Away
    • Minus The Bear - OMNI
    • The New Pornographers - Together [Pre-Order]

The Black Keys | "Next Girl" "The Everlasting Light"

2 songs [+1] presumably off May 18th's Brothers
I couldn't be happier with The Black Keys right now. On a day when the scheming little pranksters of the internet will be posting fake albums and songs, truth and justice have prevailed with the release of some new stuff from Auerbach and Carney. The band will be releasing Brothers on May 18th, their first release as a group since Attack & Release in 2008. This is already shaping up to be one of the best of 2010, so far. "My Next Girl, she'll be nothing like my ex-Girl." If those lyrics haven't appealed to you at some point in your life, live a little. The Black Keys are geniuses when it comes to bending the rules [i.e. Blakroc] and I'm sure Brothers will be more of the same originality we're used to from the duo.

[CURRENT] The Black Keys | "Tighten Up"

|:|First Single from Brothers, out 5/18|:|

The first single off The Black Keys upcoming album Brothers is streaming on their Myspace NOW. "Tighten Up" is a authentic, archetypal resounding Black Keys song with effortlessly pounding drums with badass guitar rhythms strung all over this contemporary blues piece. Not surprising, the Danger Mouse [Gnarls Barkley, Broken Bells] produced single has a soulful, catchy, melodic sound, bringing out a organic sound, lending a fresh perspective on the duo. A phenomenal song to commence the hype of Brothers.

[ANTICIPATING] The Black Keys

|:| Elite Rockers Team Back Up After Successful Projects |:|

I just have to say that this album art is kick-ass, a bold statement to extravagant covers that adorn crappy albums. Can't judge a CD by it's cover, usually.
The Black Keys, one of the best southern-blues-ish-rockin' bands is back in action after their 2008 release. The album is called, Brothers, [which they are not]. It is due out through Nonesuch Records on May 18th. There are 15 track on the album. 15? That's unheard of, a skimpy 10 is usually what we are given, but The Black Keys certainly aren't going to disappoint.  I don't know how the album has been under wraps for so long, especially with decorated releases [Dan Auerbach, Blackroc, and Drummer]by the members in 2009. This album is sure to amaze, leave your jaw on the ground, make your nipples hard, or whatever good music does to you, just like all their stuff consistently does.
