FREE MUSIC 12/28 [Mash-Up, Joe Pug, Klaxons, The North Country, & more]

Free music is always awesome. I've been inspired by some blogs, namely A Truer Sound [which I am starting to really enjoy], which have been posting some free tunes today. I'll try and keep this a weekly or bi-weekly post because I know we always don't have music to spend money on. Wait, I got that wrong, it would be nice if it was that way, but then we would be listening to some pretty shitty music. I guess the music-world is more giving around the holiday season because there is a lot of good, free music out there right now.

JOE PUG
Mr. Pug is so confident his music is good [if you didn't hear his 2010 release, Messenger go check it out] that he is MAILING physical CDs out to anyone who requests them. That's right, he's sending actual compact discs out to people who request them, so you can pass them out to your friends and their friends and so on. I highly recommend that you do this.

THE NORTH COUNTRY
The Band's Bandcamp [link below] says that this album was written and recorded in Andrew Grossman's bedroom during 2010. This is an amazingly good album for the price and for the low remarks given on the site. It's a great acoustic album but in parts instruments are thrown that compare to the Black Keys blues side then it switches straight to a poppy Freelance Whales song. It's so diverse and so good.

THE BROTHERS OF CHICO DUSTY
Big Boi vs. The Black Keys
If you haven't heard of this mash-up album by now, you're living under a rock. Its a brilliant idea. Why not combine two of the best albums of the year and make something beyond imagination. Well there is only so much to work with but wick-it puts the right beats with the right lyrics on this one. It pleases Big Boi/Outkast fans and Black Keys fans alike.

KLAXONS
I'll have to say that I wan't a big fan of their 2010 release Surfing the Void but I sure did love the cover. Well they have released a free EP, Landmarks of Lunacy, of stuff they recorded back in 2008 but hadn't yet released. And they made it available for free.

Yeasayer | Live at Ancienne Belgique [Name Your Price Album]

It wasn't the best concert I went to all year, but it was the most fun. Yeasayer stopped by Cat's Cradle back on my Birthday [Apr. 4] and really knocked my socks off with how good they sounded. This NAME YOUR PRICE live album is nothing less than I expected when I came across the great news. The quality is outstanding for this free download. Here is a little message from the band:
"Dear Wonderful Fans,
To celebrate the close of 2010, your amazing support, and numerous requests, we have decided to unlock the Yeasayer vault and release this live show recorded at the lovely Ancienne Belgique in Brussels. We are letting you, the fans, name the price. See you in 2011.
– Much Love, Yeasayer"
Head over to their WEBSITE to download this album. And, Yes, the Name-Your-Price includes FREE.

Yeasayer Meets Jay-Z

collaboration in the works?

Here is a photo from Coachella of Yeasayer's Ira Wolf Tuton and Jigga. He headlined the festival while Yeasayer was fortunate to make the bill. Whatever the case may be, the eclectic sounds of Yeasayer would be a perfect backdrop for his smooth flows. I say we pass this around and petition for a collaboration. If we talk it up, we could make it happen, we have pull in the music we want to hear. We just accept what people want to make, can we make them compose to our wants? Probably not, but it's an uplifting thought for  this rather chilly Monday.

[Yet Again] Yeasayer | Odd Blood

Yeasayer is releasing a new album on Feburary 9th, 2010 entitled Odd Blood through their label, Secretly Canadian.  So obviously it has leaked if I am writing about it, but go ahead and order it. (the price will go down before it comes out if you preorder it now, it does on all but 1 cd I’ve ever pre-ordered from Amazon) The foursome’s new album is much heavier on the synths giving them a more psychedelic sound than their 2007 debut album All Cymbals Hour. You can liken the transformation that Yeasayer has taken from ACH to OB like the one the Yeah Yeah Yeahs took from an alternative Show Your Bones to a synthesized It’s Blitz. They have much more of a definitive sound, a mix between Animal Collective, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and TV on the Radio. After listening to through the album numerous times it sounds like Merriweather Post Pavilion was their favorite album of the year and a major influence to Odd Blood.
It starts off with an almost creepy computerized voice over this dark synthesized beat that would go great on a Halloween ’10 playlist. Luckily “Ambling Alp” swoops in and saves the day from the direction “The Children” were taking the album.  I could swear that “Madder Red” is straight off of Miami Vice or Baywatch. It reminds me of the early 90’s, late 80’s music, with lots of added harmonies to distinguish it as a 2010 Yeasayer song.
“I Remember” has a very Dan Deacon ring to it, kind of like his song “Of the Mountains,” hmmm…. “ONE” starts off with a video game tune, it has to be, I recognize it from somewhere.  This song builds up just like a game of Jenga, before you start pulling the blocks out. (just when you build it up slowly from nothing)The next song, “Love Me Girl,” is a smoothie made from organic TV on the Radio, European trance, and a little V8 juice.  “Rome” is much better than the Phoenix song with the same name, just for clarification. This song reminds me of Fatboy Slim’s song “Weapon of Choice” (known best probably for its video which has Christopher Walken flying around) Nevertheless, it’s a quality track.
“Strange Reunions” has a tribal psychedelic sound going which they make work for them, much like Animal Collective does. “Mondegreen” caps off the album with an unusually fast beat, for this album at least, heavy guitar, then leaves you with a one minute cool-down/space odyssey for you to recap and reflect on the great album which you just listened to.

Alan Wilkis Does "Ambling Alp"

Yeasayer - Ambling Alp (Alan Wilkis Remix)

This remix takes an already great song and remixes it with alien sounds, snaps, xylophones, and some other exotic sounds to blow your mind away. Great remix. Enjoy the original, which isn't too far away, just more of a fulfilling band sound and less of a computerized sundae.

******if you don't find this remix satisfying, maybe you'll be THRILLED TO KNOW THAT FALL OUT BOY is officially not littering the music world with their garbage anymore******
