[VID+MP3] The Builders and the Butchers | Lullaby + Rotten To The Core + More

The Builders and the Butchers -Lullaby
The Builders and the Butchers - Rotten to the Core

Builders and butchers are quite the opposite careers, and for having such a dark and abstruse name The Builders and the Butchers have a great sound that is catchy and memorable. The have a grimy folk sound that is not only wholesome but also filling. They released their 4th album, Dead Reckoning, 2/22/2011 and its a roller coaster ride of slow and fast, turns and loops, that will get you back in line after the first ride. (Think This) I listened to Dead Reckoning for the first time last week and I couldn't get enough of it, I'm on spin 6 right now. You have to check out "Lullaby" and "Rotten to the Core," two of the highlights off their just released album, but check out some of their earlier stuff to get a feel for their progression and overall sound. They have a few free mp3s on their website, which you can find below. Don't forget about the video for "Lullaby," it's killer.

[VID+MP3] G. Love | Fixin' To Die [Produced by The Avett Brothers]

G. Love - Fixin' To Die

Let's go ahead and put it out there, the Avett Brothers can do no wrong. The Avett Brothers have taken to producing and G. Love's latest release, Fixin' To Die, is the first album they have put their name behind. Not only did they put the final touches on the album, they played instruments on the album alongside Garret Dutton [G. Love's real name] as a part of the band on each song. I don't know too much G. Love but I do know him as the pot-smoking, Jack Johnson affiliated, country-rap dude. The Avett Brothers might have tamed the artist and really harnessed his talent. Fixin' To Die came out yesterday, 2/22/11, and it's sure to be a sound, bluesy, fun album, and yet another marvel for Avett Brothers fans. Check out the video, which features the Avett Brothers, who are said to play a good amount of the instrumentation on the album, and download the mp3. Enjoy it and go cop it from Amazon

Odd Future is Changing the Rap Game | OFWGKTA on Jimmy Fallon 2/16

[NSFW][NSFW]WATCH THIS VIDEO BEFORE YOU READ[NSFW][NSFW]

With the help of Jimmy Fallon last night, the rap-punks from L.A. are now in the limelight, a place they have been shunned from for quite some time. Rap blogs, such as 2DopeBoyz and NahRight haven't been posting anything from the Odd Future Collective, even though they are change the face of rap as we know it. The no-hold, in-your-face style of Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All is weird, scary, everything that society is afraid of and that is why the group is able to do so well. If the "Yonkers" video above isn't enough proof, check out their website.
I am disappointed that Tyler, The Creator is turning to XL to release his next album, instead of sticking with his collective. He is getting a major label deal while the rest of his peeps are left in the cold. It is a one-disc deal and he said it was for family, which is re-assuring that there wont be a Weezy collab or some shitty mainstream artist to create some hype. These guys are their own hype, they have come from nothing to the next thing in the last year all by doing things their way and handling their own website, doing releases and booking shows; they need no help.
The indie/hipster blog world is all about these fools and it is awesome to see an influx of hip-hop (and dope ness nonetheless) to be popping up on blogs I frequent (GvB, Weekly Tape Deck, DCtoBC, Tumblin' Herb) as well as big news outlets such as P4K and Stereogum. Now they have really gone and gotten themselves in the eye of the public with this bizarre and unholy performance on Fallon. I think it is awesome that they can be so unapproachable on the internet but then they are collaborating with THE ROOTS and making having a great time being themselves. I am also overjoyed that Fallon knew he was about to have one of the craziest late night performances ever and embraced it and looked like he had a great time with the guys.

Check out a write I did about the collective at DTH Diversions Blog [it has links to all the free mixtapes the group has put out in 2010].

Tyler, The Creator's new album Goblin will be release via XL in April. [Just in time for me to get my hands on some vinyl after my bday] Grab the first single "Yonkers" [see video above] on iTunes now. The album art for the single is over there on the left.

[VID] Mumford & Sons, The Avett Brothers, & Bob Dylan @ Grammy's

Mumford & Sons - "The Cave"
The Avett Brothers - "Head Full of Promise/Road Full of Doubt"
Bob Dylan accompanied by the Avett Brothers and Mumford & Sons - "Maggie's Farm"

  • I hate to say it, but Bob Dylan needs to stop singing.
  • I hate to say it, but Bob Crawford needs to unplug and get upright.
  • I love seeing the Avett Brothers back in their classic attire, no more plaid and jeans.
  • Seth Avett, you are handsome when your beard isn't touching your sternum.
  • YES, The Arcade Fire won best album of the year, how did Funeral not win it way back when?
  • Can't wait to see the Avett Brothers in Charlotte on 4/9.
  • It's refreshing to see artists like these getting the audience they deserve.

[MP3+VID] Yuck

I had the pleasure of seeing Yuck open up for Smith Westerns on Sunday and they freaking rock. As I said before, nonchalant rock that rocks.

Grab "Coconut Bible," a track that won't be included on their phenomenal debut out 2/15. If you collect vinyl grab the 12" cheaper than the CD on Amazon.

Bonus:
Yuck - Automatic
Yuck - Daughter
Yuck - Rubber

[VID] Cloud Nothings | Should Have

I guess eating your lovers hair is the new "it." I'm not sure if too many people will be "doing it" for much longer. However, this may be some underground technique to make dreadlocks. Have a glance and see what you think.

[VID] Ben Nichols plays NEW Lucero Song

The lead singer of Lucero, Ben Nichols, plays a new song acoustically. Just wait until it's supported by a full band. Hot Damn.

Unexpected Surprise | Archers of Loaf Reunite @ Cat's Cradle 1/16/11 | Hi Def Videos of Concert

Last Saturday night was a homecoming for The Love Language, who have made a name for themselves nationally this year, at Cat's Cradle [Jan. 16th]. After enlisting a Carrboro band, Cellar Seas [not really up-and-coming, but they don't have a disc out yet] and a special guest I headed to the Cradle ready for some up-and-up pop music to forget about this bitter cold NC has been facing this past week. I really didn't expect there to be a big-name band slipping between the two bands, maybe a well-known, local Merge artist playing alongside the LL. Boy, was I mistaken.

I idly slept through the 90's when it comes to music. I had no idea who the older fellas taking the stage were instead of the LL. I did recognize Mac McCaughan and Jon Wurster from Superchunk and one of those bearded guys from Megafaun, so I figured something was up because the LL is worthy of these names but I didn't think . Then I got the word from my editor at Diversions that Archers of Loaf were about to play.

Me: Cool, I'm texting my dad, he'll know who this is.

My Buddy Garrett [who was at the show]: No Shit, Archers of Loaf, they broke up a decade ago.

My Dad texted me back that they were along the lines of Superchunk
Me: legit, I can dig this [I'm putting two and two together after seeing Mac and Jon]

I had no idea who these guys were and they struck me as a little hard for my scene after the first song. I was definitely hearing the Superchunk vibes and by the second song I was sold, even though it wasn't my usual cup o' tea. The set was full of energy and seemingly flawless, if I didn't know they had broken up 12 years ago and they hadn't told the crowd, I would have thought they were on tour with the LL. I'm assuming the best of the best/easiest to remember songs made up the set list, but regardless they made an impression and I'm going to scouring record stores and eBay for some AofL vinyl. I did however listen to Icky Mettle, their first album and it's beyond anything I would have expected, it's great.

Check out Pt. 2, 3, & 4 [to view to whole concert in hi-def!!!!] after the jump & the set-list as well.

Times New Viking is releasing their sophomore album, Dancer Equired, on MERGE RECORDS April 25th.

Check out the crazy detailed video above and grab the mp3 below. Looking forward to hearing more from the album in the very near future, their brand of soft-fi indie punk-rock is unmatched by its challengers.

[VID] The Low Anthem play "Ghost Woman Blues" on Letterman

What a beautiful song and performance. They don't go for a big flashy performance, like most, but their atypical performance is captivating. The Low Anthem seem to really be clicking now and settling into their skin. Looks like that Spaghetti sauce factory paid dividends to their sound and their mindset. Smart Flesh is out Feburary 22nd.

YUCK

Nonchalant Rock. Yuck's brand of garage rock is infectious and simple. They don't try to be something they aren't nor do they try to be revolutionary. This is cut and dry lo-fi music that is good. According to my father they can easily be mistaken as Teenage Fanclub. Don't get the band confused with their counterpart Yu(c)k, a piano-driven side project. Listen to "Holing Out" and "Georgia" below, but check out a few more tracks at their Soundcloud page. Their self-titled debut is out February 2/15/11 through Fat Possum.

[VID] James Blake | Limit To Your Love

I haven't posted on James Blake before, but I just recently inquired a taste for his style. He is quite the suave fella. His minimalist electro-R&B may take a minute to get into but once the shell is cracked, you're going to be search Google for all of his stuff. This is a brilliant cover of a Fiest original. His song "CMYK" was on YTE's top songs of the year, a late but crucial entrant. His self-titled album is set to be released Feburary 2nd. You'll see more on him soon.
