FREE MUSIC 12/28 [Mash-Up, Joe Pug, Klaxons, The North Country, & more]

Free music is always awesome. I've been inspired by some blogs, namely A Truer Sound [which I am starting to really enjoy], which have been posting some free tunes today. I'll try and keep this a weekly or bi-weekly post because I know we always don't have music to spend money on. Wait, I got that wrong, it would be nice if it was that way, but then we would be listening to some pretty shitty music. I guess the music-world is more giving around the holiday season because there is a lot of good, free music out there right now.

JOE PUG
Mr. Pug is so confident his music is good [if you didn't hear his 2010 release, Messenger go check it out] that he is MAILING physical CDs out to anyone who requests them. That's right, he's sending actual compact discs out to people who request them, so you can pass them out to your friends and their friends and so on. I highly recommend that you do this.

THE NORTH COUNTRY
The Band's Bandcamp [link below] says that this album was written and recorded in Andrew Grossman's bedroom during 2010. This is an amazingly good album for the price and for the low remarks given on the site. It's a great acoustic album but in parts instruments are thrown that compare to the Black Keys blues side then it switches straight to a poppy Freelance Whales song. It's so diverse and so good.

THE BROTHERS OF CHICO DUSTY
Big Boi vs. The Black Keys
If you haven't heard of this mash-up album by now, you're living under a rock. Its a brilliant idea. Why not combine two of the best albums of the year and make something beyond imagination. Well there is only so much to work with but wick-it puts the right beats with the right lyrics on this one. It pleases Big Boi/Outkast fans and Black Keys fans alike.

KLAXONS
I'll have to say that I wan't a big fan of their 2010 release Surfing the Void but I sure did love the cover. Well they have released a free EP, Landmarks of Lunacy, of stuff they recorded back in 2008 but hadn't yet released. And they made it available for free.

[FREE ALBUM] Mike Cooley [of Drive-By Truckers] Live At The 40 Watt 2/25/05

Well folks, it looks like I've passed the 500 post mark along with turning one year. Looks like the accomplishments are all coming at once. Well I went deep into the vault for this post. Let me start off by saying this, if you have illegally downloaded an album in the last week I bet this free, live album will knock its socks off. Yes, even if it's Kanye or The King Is Dead.

Mike Cooley doesn't really do back-up vocals for the Drive-By Truckers, he's more of a second lead-singer behind Patterson Hood and shares the spotlight behind Hood with Shonna Tucker, both usually have 2-3 tracks on each album. No discredit to Hood, but Cooley writes some of the best songs the Drive-By Truckers have in their collection. I downloaded this free recording of the live show over the summer and came back across it last night. If you are interested in the Drive-By Truckers, a die-hard DBT fan, semi-interested in song writing, or are a fan of alternative country, you are sure to find this precious recording a steal. His stories are usually dark and you wouldn't be hard-pressed to find these stories true if you were to head down South .[yes, further down South than NC] To quote Cooley from the album on the realness of the stories "It's true just like the rest of the stories." This album is just Cooley and an acoustic guitar on stage and the relatively quiet crowd makes the quality sound that much more studio-quality than live.

[MP3] Drive-By Truckers | Girls Who Smoke

Check out the bonus cut from The Big To-Do released back in March. "Girls Who Smoke" was a vinyl-only cut that they have released on their website. I'd say the lyics are true to their subject, but then that would be demeaning to some. The lyrics are telling:

"I can tell by her lips she's got fucked up teeth
She's got a banged up grill like she just hit a deer
In a while she'll go down in a tent with a bloke
You know what they say about girls who smoke..."

[MP3] Drive-By Truckers | Used to be a Cop

Grab an mp3 version of "Used to be a Cop" by entering your email into the box above. Go Go Boots is set to be released on February 15, 2011. It's a great song, something you would expect from the Drive-By Truckers, they hardly ever disappoint. Here is a video of the song if you want to know what you're getting into by submitting your electronic mailbox location to this little black hole of endless emails. [jk, they don't send too many emails, but you'll want to know about tour dates. Am I right or am I right?]

[VID] Patterson Hood | The Thanksgiving Filter

Here's a video of Patterson Hood performing "The Thanksgiving Filter" at an acoustic session somewhere at some point, there isn't any information about the video. Hood is the usual lead singer of The Drive-By Truckers, he splits time with Mike Cooley and sometimes Shonna Tucker.

"The Thanksgiving Filter" is going to be on a Black Friday limited 10" release along with "Used to be a Cop." And presumably the song will be added onto their upcoming album, Go-Go Boots, out Feburary 15, 2011.

This is going to be a DBT classic, the strong emotional appeal and is about the deep seated familial problems that arise around the end of November. I can't wait to hear a full version of the song.

Go-Go Boots

Here's the cover to the upcoming Drive-By Truckers album, Go-Go Boots, due out February 15th, 2011.

[VID] Drive-By Truckers | "Used To Be A Cop"

Here's a new song from the Truckers. It's going to be on their new record Go-Go Boots, out February 15th, 2011. But they are giving this one an advanced release on Black Friday along with "The Thanksgiving Filter" on a 10". The 10" will be limited to 2500 copies and will feature a sleeve designed by Wes Freed, the artist that does all their AWESOME covers. I didn't know that the Drive-By Truckers had a new album coming out so this some sweet news, since their 2010 album The Big To-Do was a classic album with character and quality. Go-Go Boots is a collection of songs that were largely recorded at the same time as The Big To-Do, so you know this record is going to be something special.

Drive-By Truckers Record Store Day Single

Here is a Record Store Day exclusive from the Drive-By Truckers. The title, "Your Woman Is A Livin' Thing,"  is how women should be viewed at the very least, I'm not going to go any further on this subject. This is song is a feminists dream... The cover surprisingly envisions this song rather brilliantly. It is mostly Mr. Patterson Hood just talking but it's comparison of a piece of chicken to women is rather obscure, and contrary to the genre of mainstream hip-hop as a whole [example]. Originally the band had planned to keep this song a secret, just for the members but their love of music and vinyl and record stores and presumably, women, led to this Record Store Day release. The B-Side of the single was "Just Maybe."

[Reviewed] Drive-By Truckers | The Big To-Do

The Drive-By Truckers have continued their ways of rather disheartening storytelling, an Aesop of the true South, if you will. It’s impossible to pin down a single song that doesn’t tell a remarkable or disheartening story. Hailing from Georgia, a true Southern mentality is characteristic of everything they produce. In Sound. In Appeal. In Dress. In Lyrics. They cater to their target audience [presumably ‘The South’] better than a slicked back tie-wearing chump at The Cheesecake Factory. The lifestyles and habits of their loyal followers are remarkably captured in The Big To-Do with incredible precision.
Their dual guitars produce a perfect backdrop for the stories that Patterson Hood vividly and emotionally tells. The guitars are the staple of the Drive-By Truckers, an engrossing aspect made apparent through heavy strumming at times and dueling at others. When Shonna Tucker takes the mic, the flow is somewhat killed, but the strength that this diversity brings to the album is unmatched. It may take a listen or four to embrace Miss Tucker’s voice but it broadens the group’s horizons and amplifies the emotionality once appreciated. One thing that would not be expected from the group is an uppity jam on “Get Downtown” with tinges of the early 1950’s. This piano led, groove throws a pulsating curveball a little outside of their natural strike zone, but it’s a chance they take, and they really knock it out of the park.
The Big To-Do is music’s favorite cookie, doublestuffed with true Southern Rock through and through. Unlike former albums, it contains an album of great songs, unlike previous albums which lack a thoroughness that is present on other albums. The Big To-Do wraps you up in cheating, death, and alcohol from beginning to end, rather dismal topics, but leaves you putting the disc back into the stereo.

[CURRENT] Drive-By Truckers | "This Fucking Job"

"This Fucking Job" is a new song from the Drive-By Truckers off their soon to be released 10th album The Big To-Do on March 16th. This heavy Southern-Rock song has the dual-guitar makings of a DBT classic. The guitar solo almost half the way through the song is compares to seeing a shooting star in the night amongst all the aspirer's synthesized airplanes. This song is 5 minutes of pure rock.
Here is the album art for the new album. A monkey riding some kind of black swan or dragon of some sort. I know the subjects of my next comparison should never be mentioned together but this is what it reminded me of. It kind of looks like Harry Potter is doing more than flying around on a broomstick, he's inspiring DBT album art. ha

Drive-By Truckers - The Big To-Do

"Drive-By Truckers are the best rock band in America." -CNN.com

The Drive-By Truckers are planning to release a new album on March 16th via there new record label ATO. Here's a picture that could very well be the cover for the new album, looks to be from the same artist.

According to their website: The inspiration for The Big To-Do came to the band during their time on the road. "We've often set our songs and albums in different periods of time, but this one finds us directly in our present. Riding all through the highways of America (and Europe) trying to make sense of a very different world than the one we grew up in," says Hood. "I don't write a lot of songs on the road, but I did more than usual on this album and many more were inspired by or set there, either in a literal sense or something I witnessed or heard about while I was out there."

Patterson Hood: "It's very much a rock album. Very melodic and more rocking than anything we've done since disc 2 of Southern Rock Opera."

Special Guest Gave Me His Top 10 of 2009

I was talking with a music savvy 40 something (not for much longer) today, whose opinions on music I value highly. CDs line the walls of his house and he is always blog surfing. He introduced me to my favorite artist, The Avett Brothers (I just can't keep them out of a post can I?), The Decemberists, and The Drive-By Truckers. And today he gave me a list his favorite albums of the year. I haven't heard most of these, I do own two, and one makes an appearance on my top 25 list. So here it goes...
(drumroll, please?)
10. Lee Fields & The Expressions - My World
9.Ian Hunter - Man Overboard
8. Reigning Sound - Love & Curses
7. Dinosaur Jr. - Farm
6.Lucero - 1372 Overton Park
5.Chuck Prophet - Let Freedom Ring
4. Drive By Truckers - The Fine Print
3. Roman Candle - Oh Tall Tree in the Ear
2.Todd Snider - The Excitement Plan
1. Bloodkin - Baby, They Told Us We Would Rise Again
