Builders and butchers are quite the opposite careers, and for having such a dark and abstruse name The Builders and the Butchers have a great sound that is catchy and memorable. The have a grimy folk sound that is not only wholesome but also filling. They released their 4th album, Dead Reckoning, 2/22/2011 and its a roller coaster ride of slow and fast, turns and loops, that will get you back in line after the first ride. (Think This) I listened to Dead Reckoning for the first time last week and I couldn't get enough of it, I'm on spin 6 right now. You have to check out "Lullaby" and "Rotten to the Core," two of the highlights off their just released album, but check out some of their earlier stuff to get a feel for their progression and overall sound. They have a few free mp3s on their website, which you can find below. Don't forget about the video for "Lullaby," it's killer.

Danish band Alcoholic Faith Mission is a great transition into a Springtime mentality. Both the male and female singers are fluent and refined a refreshing change from the over-polished sound that takes the cake these days. Harmonicas, horns, and hand claps create a unique and full sound with the use of minimal guitars. There is a Freelance Whales vibe going on here, with its eclectic indie sound, but a more wholesome and less candy coated overall product. Their Running With Insanity EP came out 2/21/2011 and is the first bloom of the season.

Let's go ahead and put it out there, the Avett Brothers can do no wrong. The Avett Brothers have taken to producing and G. Love's latest release, Fixin' To Die, is the first album they have put their name behind. Not only did they put the final touches on the album, they played instruments on the album alongside Garret Dutton [G. Love's real name] as a part of the band on each song. I don't know too much G. Love but I do know him as the pot-smoking, Jack Johnson affiliated, country-rap dude. The Avett Brothers might have tamed the artist and really harnessed his talent. Fixin' To Die came out yesterday, 2/22/11, and it's sure to be a sound, bluesy, fun album, and yet another marvel for Avett Brothers fans. Gotta hop on the track-a-week train this time. Delta Rae, a local Durham band has introduced GRAET Mondays (yes, it's tuesday, but what the hell) and they are going to release 12 songs (basically an album). This is the best idea since G.O.O.D. Fridays. Forget Snoop Tuesdays or w/e they are called and all those other jokers with theirI haven't heard anything about this band before, but I am really digging their sound and this very novel idea. This is a soft little folk band with valiant sound, listen to the stream and download the song below. Look for these posts in the future. Saw this over at Sunset In The Rearview.

         Some of the first modern rock-n-roll that I really got into. I couldn't tell you how many times I played Elephant and Get Behind Me Satan. They will be missed. Hopefully The Raconteurs (are they still a thing?) will resurface with some new tunes, I can barely stand The Dead Weather.

          Here is a new song from the frontman of Dinosaur Jr. Several Shades of Why is Mascis' first solo studio record. The album is said to be almost exclusively acoustic featuring the likes of Ben Bridewell of Band of Horses, Kurt Vile as well as members from Broken Social Scene and Black Heart Procession. I'm a little young to be associated with the Triassic age of his band's existence, but this single is enough to sell me on Several Shades of Why and maybe MOGing some old Dinosaur Jr.

     The world has been waiting for this news since '08. Fleet Foxes are releasing their Sophomore album Helplessness Blues on May 4th. This one has a strong acoustic guitar and Fleet Foxes always-elegant vocals. GET IT NOW. Only 3 months and a couple of days. By the way, I'm really digging the cover on this one.

           I am definitely a fan of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes and now their singer has set his skills towards a solo album. I've heard it and it's right along the lines of ES&MZ. Tie-dye folk for a sunny day. I do recommend that you keep an eye out for his Vagrant Records self-titled debut out March 1st.

          The Babies are exactly what you would expect from a collaboration between Vivian Girl, Cassie Ramone, and Wood's Kevin Morby. The duo opened the garage and brought their rock to the beach. The fun-in-the-sun debut album combines lo-fi and catchy pop music to create a thoroughly enjoyable album. Looks like that Wavves/Best Coast tag-team album was bested in time and by The Babies, because

          Just trying to give you an idea of their sound, this is much better quality than their two 2010 albums combined. I just imagine Matthew McConaughey in Dazed and Confused just jamming to this stuff stoned out of his mind with some 9th grade babe.

          I highly recommend that you download "Meet Me In The City" and "Run Me Over" below and watch out for their self-titled album  out Feb. 9th on Shrimper.

[MP3] Troubel | Just Let Him Be

I was doing a little bandcamping earlier today and came across Troubel, a great little folk band with a tender sound. The band is the project of Raleigh, NC [via Boone, NC] troubadour troubeladour Adam Walton, and Troubel's first album The Mountain. The Broken, released Dec. 7, 2010,  featured collaborations with local musicians including his fiancée Anna Cox. The first name that came to mind when listening was The Tallest Man on Earth; both have an impressive mastery of the guitar. However upon listening further, violins, banjos, and elegant female vocals accompany the mountainous and heartfelt stories the album contains.

It is exactly what you would expect from Telekinesis, a short catchy pop song on the outside with serious and large topics in mind on the inside.
